Soothing for your skin. Soothing for tired and sore muscles. Soothing for your joints.
The key ingredient in our “Matariki” Soothing Body Cream is a generous amount of kawakawa tincture. Kawakawa is one of the most important plants in rongoā, traditional Māori medicine, used to treat anything from cuts and wounds to toothache and digestive problems.
In skincare, it is truly an all-around soothing ingredient. Kawakawa has antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, and contains myrsticin, which is a mild antiseptic. It also has circulatory stimulant action.
Kawakawa is used to soothe common skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis and skin rashes. It helps to heal minor cuts, wounds and burns. It soothes chilblains, gardening rashes, insect bites and nettle stings. It is calming to dry, chapped skin. Kawakawa is also great for soothing aching muscles and helping to heal bruises. Kawakawa helps reduce joint pain, including from arthritis and other rheumatic pain. Finally, kawakawa’s distinctive, stimulating aroma is widely thought of as a typical New Zealand scent.
In addition to kawaka, we added kānuka essential oil. Kānuka is another native plant traditionally used in Māori medicine for pain and inflammation relief. Like kawakawa, it also has antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties and a pleasant scent.
The final touch is a dab of Helichrysum italicum essential oil. This precious and powerful essential oil is highly valued by connoisseurs for its reputed extraordinary healing and rejuvenating powers.
As carrier oils, we chose fast- and deep-absorbing jojoba and apricot kernel oils, both of which are suitable for all skin types, including oily, acne-prone and sensitive skin. Apricot kernel oil facilitates faster healing of chapped, grazed or itchy skin. Jojoba oil creates a moisturising, protective barrier on the skin to help guard it from the elements.
As this is a water-oil-based cream, we use Emulsifier O (cetearyl olivate & sorbitan olivate), which is derived from olives, and we use Geogard 221 (benzyl alcohol & dehydroacetic acid) as a preservative (a must-do in any cosmetics containing water), which is approved for use in organic products. Both are Ecocert approved.
We hope that in the future we will be able to obtain eco-certification for our products, so please support us on our journey, and let us know all your feedback.
